Hello everyone, and welcome to this lesson on using the right photos on your Google Business Profile as a general contractor.

For general contractors, photos can be one of the most powerful parts of your profile.

A homeowner searching for a contractor isn’t simply interested in reading a list of services. They want to see what you’ve actually built, remodeled, repaired, or transformed.

If someone is considering spending $30,000, $75,000, or even more on a renovation, seeing examples of completed projects can make a major difference in whether they contact your company or continue looking at competitors.

Your photos provide visual proof of your experience.

Show the Work You Want More Of

One of the most important rules for choosing photos is simple:

Show potential customers the types of projects you want them to hire you for.

If kitchen remodeling is one of your most profitable services, your profile should contain excellent photos of completed kitchens.

If you want more home additions, show additions.

If whole-home renovations are your specialty, make those projects prominent.

Don’t fill your profile with photos of small repair jobs if you’re trying to attract major remodeling projects.

Every photo helps create an impression of what your company does.

Imagine a homeowner is planning a $60,000 kitchen remodel. They find two contractors on Google Maps.

The first contractor has photos of work trucks, employees, construction equipment, and a few random repair projects.

The second has beautiful photos showing completed kitchens, including before-and-after transformations.

Which contractor is the homeowner more likely to investigate further?

Probably the second.

Your photo strategy should support your business strategy.

Before-and-After Photos Are Extremely Powerful

Few things demonstrate a contractor’s abilities better than before-and-after photos.

A finished kitchen looks impressive.

But when a customer can see what that kitchen looked like before the renovation, the transformation becomes much more meaningful.

Before-and-after photos work especially well for:

Kitchen remodeling

Bathroom remodeling

Basement finishing

Whole-home renovations

Exterior remodeling

Deck replacements

Room additions

Garage conversions

Try to photograph projects from approximately the same position before and after the work.

This makes the transformation easier to recognize.

You don’t need professional photography equipment for every picture. A modern smartphone can produce excellent images when there’s sufficient lighting and you take a moment to frame the shot properly.

Photograph Projects Throughout Construction

Don’t wait until the final day to remember that you need photos.

Create a habit of documenting projects from beginning to end.

For a major renovation, you might take photos during:

The original condition

Demolition

Framing

Electrical and plumbing work

Drywall installation

Cabinet installation

Flooring

Finish work

The completed project

You don’t need to upload every construction-stage photo to your Google Business Profile.

However, having these photos gives you options.

Progress photos can demonstrate the scope of the work involved and show that your company handles substantial construction projects rather than just cosmetic improvements.

They can also provide valuable content for your website and social media.

Finished Projects Should Be the Stars

Although progress photos can be useful, completed projects should generally receive the most attention.

Your finished-project photos show potential customers what they can expect.

If you remodel kitchens, photograph the completed cabinets, countertops, islands, flooring, lighting, and overall room.

For bathrooms, show the finished shower, vanity, tile work, fixtures, and overall layout.

For additions, include both exterior and interior photos whenever possible.

For whole-home renovations, photograph several rooms to demonstrate the scale of the project.

Think of your Google Business Profile as a small portfolio.

A potential customer should be able to browse your photos and quickly understand the quality and type of work your company performs.

Use Good Lighting

You don’t need to become a professional photographer, but lighting makes an enormous difference.

Whenever possible, photograph finished projects during daylight.

Open curtains and blinds.

Turn on interior lighting.

Avoid extremely dark rooms or harsh shadows.

Before taking the photo, look around the room for anything distracting.

Remove tools, buckets, extension cords, construction debris, coffee cups, and other items that make the finished project look incomplete.

You spent weeks or months creating the project.

Spending five minutes preparing the room for a photograph is worth the effort.

Keep Photos Authentic

Use photos of your actual work.

Stock photography may look beautiful, but it doesn’t demonstrate what your company can do.

Potential customers want to see projects your business completed.

Authenticity is particularly valuable in the construction industry because homeowners are trying to determine whether they can trust a contractor with a major investment.

Real projects tell a much stronger story than generic images of perfect kitchens downloaded from a stock photography website.

Even if your photos aren’t magazine quality, genuine examples of excellent work are more meaningful.

Show Different Types of Projects

Your photo collection should represent your major services.

For example, a general contractor specializing in residential remodeling might build a photo collection containing:

Kitchen renovations

Bathroom remodels

Finished basements

Home additions

Whole-home renovations

Decks and porches

Exterior renovations

Custom carpentry

If kitchen remodeling accounts for half your business, it’s perfectly reasonable for kitchens to represent a large percentage of your photos.

Your photo collection doesn’t need to give every service equal representation.

It should reflect your priorities.

Show Different Angles

One photo isn’t always enough to demonstrate a project.

Take several pictures from different angles.

For a kitchen remodel, you might photograph:

The entire kitchen

The island

The cabinetry

The countertops

A custom storage feature

The lighting

A wide view showing how the kitchen connects to another room

Details can help customers appreciate the craftsmanship involved.

However, don’t upload ten nearly identical photos.

Choose images that each show something useful.

Include Exterior Photos

Exterior photos can also strengthen a general contractor’s profile.

If you build additions, decks, porches, garages, or perform exterior renovations, show them.

Exterior photos are particularly effective when the project dramatically changes the appearance or functionality of a property.

Before-and-after images can make these transformations especially obvious.

You can also include a good photo of your business location if customers visit it.

If you operate as a service-area business and customers don’t visit your location, focus more heavily on your projects and team.

Include Your Team and Equipment

Not every photo needs to be a completed renovation.

Potential customers may also appreciate seeing the people behind the company.

Consider adding a few photos of:

Your team

Employees working on a project

Branded company vehicles

Your shop or office

Professional equipment

Project planning meetings

Your crew on a job site

These images can make the business feel established and real.

Just don’t allow them to overwhelm your portfolio.

A homeowner looking for a kitchen remodeling contractor is probably more interested in seeing kitchens than twelve photos of your trucks.

Avoid Low-Quality Photos

A poor photo can make excellent construction work look mediocre.

Avoid uploading images that are:

Blurry

Extremely dark

Poorly framed

Accidentally tilted

Filled with construction debris after the project is supposedly finished

Screenshots from other websites

Covered with excessive promotional text

Take a few extra pictures whenever you’re documenting a project. Then choose the best ones.

Storage is cheap. Completed projects are not.

Once a project is finished and the homeowner has moved back into the space, you may never have another opportunity to photograph it properly.

Get Permission When Necessary

Remember that you’re photographing someone’s property.

Make sure you have appropriate permission before using identifiable photos of a customer’s home for marketing.

Avoid accidentally displaying sensitive information such as:

House numbers

Vehicle license plates

Personal documents

Family photographs

Security equipment details

Children or other individuals who haven’t agreed to appear

You can showcase your craftsmanship without unnecessarily exposing your customer’s private information.

Add New Photos Regularly

Don’t upload twenty photos once and then ignore your profile for three years.

Your portfolio should grow as your company completes new projects.

Make photography part of your normal project-completion process.

When a major job is finished:

Clean the work area.

Stage the room if appropriate.

Take several high-quality photos.

Select the best images.

Add them to your Google Business Profile.

This gives you a growing visual record of your work.

It also means customers aren’t looking at a profile where the newest project photo appears to be several years old.

Turn Your Google Business Profile Into a Portfolio

General contractors have an advantage that many other businesses don’t have.

Your work is visual.

A customer may not fully understand the difference between one contractor and another by reading a business description, but they can immediately understand a dramatic kitchen transformation or a beautifully completed home addition.

Use that advantage.

Review the photos currently displayed on your Google Business Profile.

Ask yourself:

Do these photos represent our best work?

Do they show the projects we want more of?

Do we have before-and-after examples?

Are our most profitable services well represented?

Do the photos look professional and authentic?

Would these images make me comfortable hiring this contractor for a major project?

Remove or replace weak images when appropriate, and begin documenting every important project going forward.

Over time, your Google Business Profile can become much more than a business listing.

It can become a visual portfolio showing potential customers exactly what your company is capable of doing.

In the next lesson, we’ll complete this specialization by focusing on the best local keywords for general contractors and how to identify the search phrases customers in your area are actually using.
