For an HVAC company, choosing the right Google Business Profile categories is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your visibility on Google Maps.

Google uses your categories to understand what your company does and determine which searches your business may be relevant for. When someone searches for an “HVAC company near me,” “air conditioning repair,” “furnace repair,” or another heating and cooling service, your categories help Google determine whether your business belongs in those results.

Since you’ve already completed the Get Found on Google Maps – Invisible No More course, you know the fundamentals of optimizing a Google Business Profile. In this lesson, we’re going to focus specifically on categories that make sense for HVAC companies and how to choose the best combination for the services you actually provide.

Your Primary Category Matters Most

Every Google Business Profile has one primary category. This should represent the main service your company provides.

For many HVAC companies, HVAC contractor will be the most appropriate primary category.

This category gives Google a broad but accurate description of a company that installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

If HVAC work represents the majority of your business, choosing HVAC contractor as your primary category usually makes the most sense.

However, not every heating and cooling business is structured the same way.

Some companies specialize almost entirely in air conditioning. Others focus heavily on heating systems, furnaces, boilers, or commercial refrigeration. Your primary category should reflect what your company actually does rather than simply choosing a category because you think it might generate more searches.

Think about the service you most want your company associated with.

If someone could describe your entire company using only one Google Business Profile category, which category would be the most accurate?

That is usually a good indication of what your primary category should be.

Useful Secondary Categories for HVAC Companies

Google allows businesses to select additional categories in addition to the primary category.

These secondary categories can help Google understand the other services your company provides.

Depending on your business, useful categories may include:

Air conditioning contractor — A strong choice for HVAC companies that install, repair, replace, or maintain central air conditioning systems.

Heating contractor — Appropriate for companies that provide furnace, boiler, heat pump, or other heating-related services.

Air conditioning repair service — Useful if AC repair is a significant part of your business.

Furnace repair service — Consider this category if furnace troubleshooting and repair are important services for your company.

Air duct cleaning service — Appropriate when professional duct cleaning is an actual service you provide.

Refrigerator repair service — This may apply to HVAC companies that also provide refrigeration repair, particularly those serving commercial customers. Do not add it simply because refrigeration technology is related to HVAC.

Your secondary categories should expand Google’s understanding of your business without misrepresenting what you offer.

For example, an HVAC company that provides air conditioning installation, AC repair, furnace installation, furnace repair, and heat pump services might use HVAC contractor as its primary category while adding air conditioning contractor and heating contractor as secondary categories.

That gives Google a clearer picture of the company’s specialties.

Don’t Add Categories Just Because They Exist

One of the easiest mistakes to make is adding every category that seems remotely related to heating and cooling.

More categories do not automatically produce more visibility.

Your goal isn’t to create the longest possible category list. Your goal is to create the most accurate one.

Only choose a category if your company genuinely operates as that type of business.

Suppose you occasionally replace a thermostat during an HVAC installation. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should choose categories associated with electrical services.

Likewise, installing a water heater doesn’t automatically mean your HVAC company should present itself as a full plumbing company if plumbing isn’t actually a significant part of your business.

Irrelevant categories can make your profile less focused and can also create expectations from customers that your company cannot fulfill.

Keep your categories closely connected to your real services.

Match Categories to the Customers You Want

Categories should also reflect the type of work you want to attract.

Imagine that your HVAC company performs both heating and cooling services, but air conditioning installation and repair represent a major source of revenue.

Using HVAC contractor as your primary category and air conditioning contractor as a secondary category can help Google understand that relationship.

Another company might specialize in heating systems in a colder climate. Heating contractor may deserve greater emphasis.

A commercial HVAC company could have another combination depending on the work it performs.

The important thing is to think beyond what your company can do and consider what it actually does on a regular basis.

Ask yourself:

What services generate most of our revenue?

What services do we perform most frequently?

Which services are most important for future growth?

What would customers normally call a company like ours?

Your answers can help you determine which categories deserve a place on your profile.

Categories and Services Work Together

Remember that your Google Business Profile categories and your services section serve different purposes.

Categories tell Google what type of business you operate.

Services provide more specific information about what the business does.

You don’t need to find a category for every individual HVAC service.

For example, your company might provide:

AC repair
AC installation
Furnace repair
Furnace installation
Heat pump installation
Heat pump repair
HVAC maintenance
Thermostat installation
Ductwork repair
Indoor air quality services

You don’t necessarily need a separate Google category corresponding to every service.

Instead, select the categories that accurately describe the overall business and then use your services section to provide the details.

We’ll take a much closer look at choosing and adding HVAC services in the next lesson.

Don’t Choose Categories Based Only on Competitors

Checking successful competitors can give you useful information, but you shouldn’t automatically copy their categories.

A competitor may provide services you don’t offer. They may also have selected categories that aren’t particularly accurate.

Instead, use competitor research as a source of ideas.

If several successful HVAC companies in your market are using a category you haven’t considered, investigate whether that category accurately describes your company.

If it does, it may be worth adding.

If it doesn’t, leave it alone.

Accuracy should always come before imitation.

Review Your Categories as Your HVAC Company Changes

Your Google Business Profile categories don’t have to remain unchanged forever.

HVAC companies evolve.

You might begin offering duct cleaning. You may expand into commercial refrigeration. Perhaps you stop providing a particular service or begin specializing more heavily in heat pumps.

When your business changes significantly, review your Google Business Profile categories.

A category that accurately described your company two years ago may not be the best choice today.

It’s a good idea to periodically look at your categories and ask whether they still represent the services your company provides and the customers you’re trying to attract.

You should also be aware that Google occasionally changes the categories available within Google Business Profile. A more appropriate category may become available in the future.

Keep Your Category Strategy Simple

For most HVAC companies, category selection doesn’t need to be complicated.

Start with the category that most accurately describes the overall company. For a traditional heating and cooling business, that’s often HVAC contractor.

Then add a small number of relevant secondary categories that represent major areas of the business, such as air conditioning contractor or heating contractor.

Avoid adding categories for services you don’t actually provide.

Your finished category selection should give Google a simple, accurate picture of your business.

When Google understands exactly what your company does, it has better information to determine when your profile is relevant to a customer’s search.

In the next lesson, we’ll go deeper into the individual services you should consider adding to your Google Business Profile so potential customers—and Google—can better understand exactly what your HVAC company offers.
