For an electrical business, choosing the right Google Business Profile categories is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your visibility on Google Maps.
Google uses your categories to understand exactly what your business does and determine which searches your business may be relevant for. When someone searches for an “electrician near me,” “electrical contractor,” “emergency electrician,” or another electrical service, your categories help Google decide whether your business belongs in those results.
Since you’ve already completed the Get Found on Google Maps – Invisible No More course, you know the fundamentals of Google Business Profile optimization. In this lesson, we’re going to focus specifically on categories that make sense for electrical businesses and how to choose the best combination for the services you actually provide.
Your Primary Category Matters Most
Every Google Business Profile has one primary category. This should represent the main service your company provides.
For most residential and general electrical businesses, the best primary category will be:
Electrician
This is the most straightforward category because it closely matches what potential customers are likely to search for.
If someone has a circuit breaker that keeps tripping, needs a new electrical panel, wants additional outlets installed, or needs electrical wiring repaired, they are very likely to search for an electrician.
Choosing Electrician as your primary category gives Google a strong indication that your business should be considered for searches involving electrical services.
However, not every electrical company operates exactly the same way.
Some companies primarily work on large construction projects. Others specialize in commercial electrical systems, solar installations, generators, security systems, or other specialized services.
Your primary category should describe the main business you want Google to associate with your company.
Electrician vs. Electrical Installation Service
Depending on the services your company provides and the categories currently available in Google Business Profile, you may find categories related to electrical installation or electrical services.
For a traditional local electrician serving homeowners and businesses, Electrician will generally be the most appropriate primary category.
An electrical installation-related category may make sense as an additional category when a significant portion of your business involves installing electrical systems or equipment.
Think about your ideal customer.
If someone asked, “What kind of company are you?” and the simplest answer would be “We’re electricians,” then Electrician is probably the right primary category.
Don’t make category selection more complicated than it needs to be.
The goal isn’t to find the most impressive-sounding category. The goal is to give Google the clearest possible description of your business.
Electrical Engineer Is Not the Same as Electrician
One category electrical contractors should be careful about using is Electrical Engineer.
An electrical engineer and an electrician are not the same profession.
Electrical engineers typically design, analyze, or develop electrical systems. Electricians generally install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot those systems.
If your company provides residential electrical repairs and installations, selecting Electrical Engineer simply because the words “electrical” and “engineer” sound relevant can send Google the wrong signal.
Categories should describe services you genuinely provide.
If electrical engineering is actually a major part of your company and qualified professionals provide those services, the category may be appropriate. Otherwise, leave it out.
Additional Categories Can Expand Your Relevance
Your primary category tells Google what your business mainly does, while additional categories can provide more information about other important parts of your business.
An electrical company might potentially have relevant additional categories associated with services such as:
Electrical installation
Generator installation or service
Solar energy
Security systems
Fire alarm systems
Lighting
Home automation
These should only be added when they accurately describe a meaningful part of your business.
For example, suppose your company is primarily a residential electrical contractor, but you also install and service standby generators.
Your primary category might remain:
Electrician
You could then add a generator-related category if an appropriate one is available.
This helps Google understand that your business isn’t simply a general electrician. Generator services are also an important part of what you do.
Don’t Add Categories Just Because They’re Available
One of the easiest mistakes to make is adding every category that seems remotely related to electrical work.
More categories do not automatically mean more visibility.
Categories are supposed to describe your business, not function as a list of keywords.
For example, an electrician who occasionally connects wiring for an HVAC system should not automatically select an HVAC contractor category.
Similarly, installing an electrical circuit for a security system doesn’t necessarily make your company a security system installer.
Ask yourself a simple question before adding an additional category:
Would I actively advertise this as one of my company’s services?
If the answer is no, the category probably doesn’t belong on your profile.
Your categories should reflect the services that customers can actually hire you to perform.
Match Categories to the Customers You Want
Category selection becomes especially useful when you think beyond what your business does today and consider the type of work you want more of.
Suppose your company provides dozens of electrical services, but your most profitable work includes electrical panel replacements, EV charger installations, generator installations, and residential electrical upgrades.
Your primary category would probably still be Electrician because it describes the business as a whole.
However, relevant additional categories can help reinforce specialized areas when Google provides an appropriate category for them.
The important distinction is that you shouldn’t choose categories for services you might offer someday.
They should represent services you’re currently prepared to provide.
Don’t Try to Turn Categories Into Keywords
Google Business Profile categories are predefined by Google. You cannot create your own category such as:
“Emergency Electrician in Denver”
“Affordable Residential Electrician”
“24-Hour Electrical Repair”
“Best Electrician Near Me”
Those are search phrases, not business categories.
You’ll have other opportunities to communicate specific services and geographic relevance through your profile. We’ll cover services in Lesson 2, your business description in Lesson 3, photos in Lesson 4, and local keywords in Lesson 5.
For now, categories should simply tell Google what type of business you operate.
Review Your Categories Periodically
Google occasionally changes, adds, or removes Business Profile categories.
That means the categories available today may not be identical to the categories available several months from now.
It’s worth checking your profile periodically to see whether Google has introduced a more specific category that accurately describes an important part of your electrical business.
This is particularly important for companies offering newer services.
EV charger installation is a good example. As consumer demand changes and new industries grow, Google’s available categories and features can evolve as well.
You don’t need to constantly change your categories, but reviewing them every few months is a sensible part of maintaining your profile.
Look at Your Business From Google’s Perspective
Imagine Google trying to answer a customer’s search.
The customer searches:
“electrician near me.”
Google has to determine which local businesses are actually electricians and which are most relevant to that search.
Your categories are one of the clearest pieces of information you can provide.
That’s why your primary category should be highly accurate and your additional categories should reinforce the real services your company provides.
For most traditional electrical businesses, that means starting with Electrician as the primary category and then adding only the additional categories that accurately represent substantial services offered by the company.
Avoid irrelevant categories, don’t select categories merely because they contain useful-sounding words, and don’t try to use categories as keywords.
A tightly focused category setup gives Google a much clearer picture of your electrical business—and that provides a stronger foundation for everything else we’re going to optimize in this specialization.
In the next lesson, we’ll look at the best services electricians should add to their Google Business Profile and how to use those services to make it easier for Google and potential customers to understand exactly what your company offers.
