Using the Right Photos for Your Plumbing Business

Photos are one of the easiest ways to make your Google Business Profile more useful and convincing to potential customers.

For plumbers, photos serve a different purpose than they might for restaurants, hotels, retail stores, or other businesses where appearance is a major part of the buying decision.

Most homeowners aren’t looking for beautiful plumbing.

They’re looking for evidence that your company is legitimate, professional, experienced, and capable of solving their problem.

The right photos can provide that evidence before the customer ever visits your website or calls your business.

Your goal isn’t simply to upload a large number of photos. It’s to create a collection of authentic images that shows potential customers what your plumbing company actually does.

Show Real Plumbing Work

Some of the most valuable photos you can add are pictures of actual plumbing jobs.

These could include:

Water heater installations

Tankless water heater installations

Pipe repairs

New plumbing installations

Faucet installations

Sink installations

Toilet installations

Sump pump installations

Water filtration systems

Sewer equipment

Repiping projects

Commercial plumbing work

The exact photos you use should reflect the services your company wants to promote.

If water heater installation is an important part of your business, don’t make customers guess whether you install water heaters.

Show them.

If your company specializes in drain and sewer work, include photos of the equipment and projects associated with those services.

Over time, your photos can become a visual representation of your service list.

Use Before-and-After Photos

Before-and-after images can work especially well for certain plumbing projects.

For example, you might photograph an old, corroded water heater before removing it and then photograph the newly installed water heater.

You could show old plumbing during a repiping project followed by the finished installation.

A damaged or leaking fixture could be photographed before replacement and again after the new fixture is installed.

Before-and-after images make the work tangible.

Instead of simply telling a customer that you replace water heaters or repair plumbing systems, you’re showing examples of completed jobs.

Keep these photos realistic.

The goal isn’t to make every plumbing project look like a professional advertising campaign. The authenticity of a real job can actually be part of what makes the photo convincing.

Photograph Your Plumbers at Work

People hire people.

That’s particularly important for home-service businesses because customers are often allowing a stranger into their homes.

Photos of your plumbers working can make the business feel much more familiar.

Consider adding photos showing team members:

Working on plumbing systems

Installing water heaters

Using drain-cleaning equipment

Inspecting pipes

Working in utility rooms

Preparing equipment

Standing beside company vehicles

Interacting professionally at job sites

These images allow customers to see the people behind the business.

A potential customer may even recognize the plumber who arrives at their home from a photo they saw on Google.

That familiarity can help build trust.

Of course, make sure employees are comfortable being photographed and that the images are appropriate for public use.

Show Your Company Vehicles

A professionally marked plumbing truck or van is an excellent subject for Google Business Profile photos.

Your vehicles can reinforce that you’re an established local business rather than someone doing occasional plumbing jobs out of an unmarked car.

Photograph clean company vehicles where the branding can be seen clearly.

You might show:

A plumbing van outside your business

Several company vehicles together

A plumber standing beside a branded vehicle

A vehicle at an appropriate job location

Avoid making every photo about your trucks, but include enough to help customers recognize your company.

This can have another practical benefit.

When your plumbing van arrives at a customer’s home, the customer already knows what to expect.

Show Your Equipment

Specialized equipment can demonstrate capabilities that customers may not realize your company has.

For example, a drain and sewer company might photograph:

Drain-cleaning machines

Sewer cameras

Hydro jetting equipment

Pipe inspection equipment

Other specialized tools

You don’t need to photograph every wrench in the truck.

Focus on equipment connected with important or specialized services.

A homeowner searching for sewer line inspection may feel more confident calling a company after seeing that it actually has professional sewer camera equipment.

Photos can support the story you’re telling through your categories, services, and business description.

Include Team Photos

Individual and group photos can make your Google Business Profile feel more personal.

If you have several employees, consider taking a professional but natural group photo.

You could photograph the team:

Outside your business

In front of company vehicles

Inside your shop

At a company event

At an appropriate job site

You can also include individual photos of plumbers, technicians, office staff, and owners.

These don’t need to look like formal corporate headshots.

For a local plumbing company, friendly and authentic often works better than overly polished stock-style photography.

The customer should get the impression:

These are the people who will be helping me.

Show Your Physical Location When Appropriate

If customers visit your location, include useful exterior and interior photos.

An exterior photo can help customers recognize the building.

You might also show:

Your entrance

Company signage

Reception area

Showroom

Service counter

Warehouse or shop

If you operate as a service-area business and customers don’t visit your location, job-site, team, vehicle, and project photos will generally be more useful than trying to showcase a location customers never see.

Choose photos based on how your plumbing business actually operates.

Avoid Relying on Stock Photos

Stock photos of smiling plumbers holding wrenches are easy to find.

They’re also easy for customers to recognize as generic.

Whenever possible, use photographs of your real business.

Your actual employees are more valuable than models dressed as plumbers.

Your actual vehicles are more meaningful than a generic white service van.

Your completed plumbing projects are more convincing than a perfectly staged photograph purchased from an image library.

Authenticity is one of your biggest advantages as a local business.

Use it.

Pay Attention to Photo Quality

Authentic doesn’t mean careless.

You don’t need to hire a professional photographer every time you complete a plumbing job. Modern smartphones can produce excellent photos.

But take a few seconds to improve each shot.

Make sure there’s enough light.

Keep the camera steady.

Clean the camera lens.

Avoid extremely cluttered backgrounds when possible.

Make sure the important part of the project is clearly visible.

Take several photos so you can choose the best one later.

Before photographing a completed installation, clean the work area if possible.

A neatly installed water heater photographed in a clean workspace creates a very different impression from the same installation surrounded by trash, packaging, tools, and debris.

Your photos are representing the quality of your business.

Protect Customer Privacy

Job-site photos require some common sense.

Don’t upload images containing information customers wouldn’t want displayed publicly.

Watch for:

House numbers

Mail

Family photographs

Personal documents

Computer screens

Vehicle license plates

Security systems

Children or other people who haven’t agreed to appear

Anything else that could unnecessarily identify the customer

The plumbing project should be the focus of the photo.

When appropriate, ask permission before taking or publishing photographs inside a customer’s home.

Keep Adding Photos Over Time

Don’t upload 20 photos when you create your profile and then ignore it for three years.

Your plumbing business is constantly producing opportunities for new images.

A new water heater installation can become a photo.

A major repiping job can become a photo.

A new company van can become a photo.

A new employee can become a photo.

A specialized piece of equipment can become a photo.

Build photo collection into your normal business routine.

Your plumbers could even be encouraged to take a few appropriate photos after completing certain jobs.

Over time, you’ll build a large library of authentic images showing the services your company actually provides.

Connect Your Photos With Your Most Important Services

Review the service priorities you established earlier in this course.

If drain cleaning is one of your most important services, your photos should include drain-cleaning work and equipment.

If water heaters are important, show water heater installations.

If sewer services generate high-value jobs, show sewer equipment and projects.

If your company specializes in commercial plumbing, include examples of commercial work.

This creates consistency throughout your Google Business Profile.

Your categories say what kind of business you are.

Your Services section says what you do.

Your description explains the business.

Your photos provide visual evidence.

Putting Lesson 4 Into Action

Review the photos currently displayed on your Google Business Profile.

Then identify what’s missing.

At a minimum, try to build a useful collection containing several different types of images:

Completed plumbing projects

Before-and-after projects

Plumbers working

Team members

Company vehicles

Specialized equipment

Your physical location, when relevant

Next, identify your five most important plumbing services and ask yourself:

Do our photos visually represent these services?

If the answer is no, start photographing those types of jobs.

Don’t worry about creating a perfect photo library overnight.

Instead, develop the habit of capturing authentic images as your company completes real plumbing work.

A strong photo collection gives potential customers something your written profile can’t provide on its own – visible proof that you’re a real plumbing company doing real plumbing work in their community.
